Paia in Maui County is Delightful
If you are looking for a great place to build your Maui home, Paia in Maui County is ideal. Aside from being the windsurfing capital of the world, this north-coast town is the first town on the famous Road To Hana. As part of Maui’s historic sugar plantation past, the old wooden sugar industry buildings are still standing and house a range of businesses now such as art galleries, local restaurants, and tourist-oriented businesses such as beach shops and swimwear boutiques.
Paia has a bohemian vibe similar to the hippie towns on the Mainland thanks to the folks who moved in after the sugar industry closed. In the 1980s, an influx of windsurfers from around the world discovered nearby Hookipa Beach as a mecca for the sport and brought in an international influence. Like Hana, Paia is still mostly “Hawaiian.” It isn’t like crowded tourist areas like Waikiki and Honolulu. Rather it maintains a small village atmosphere, with less stress and a peacefulness many choose to enjoy.
Settling Down In Paia
Building a home here means you’ll enjoy all the things that people fly to Hawaii to experience—anytime you want. From swimming, windsurfing, yoga, and dining to the local artisans and art galleries, Paia has a range of things to enjoy year-round. Fodor’s calls Paia one of “America’s Best Small Towns.”
Paia is one of those places that a Mainland ex-pat would find ideal. Homes are smaller here than they are on the Mainland, but there is so much more to enjoy. Many people come to visit Maui and decide to build their dream home here.
For instance, Paia is in close proximity to the NorthShore beaches, you won’t have to go far to get there. Sprecklesville and Hookipa beaches are just a short distance from anywhere in this small but vibrant town. You can hear the ocean from your lanai (patio.)
Paia has both a wet and dry season, but temperatures are moderate year-round. Hiking, surfing, bicycling, and other outdoor activities can be enjoyed year round. There’s no need to stay indoors so much when sunshine and enjoyable activities are right outside your door.
Shopping Local
Paia is home to many local artisans who create local clothing, jewelry, leather goods, pottery, and art for sale. Places like Indigo also offer a wide array of rugs and fine art prints of local photography that are sure to make your new house a true and comfortable Maui home.
The Maui Crafts Guild is Maui’s only artist-owned and operated cooperative gallery. Located at 120 Hana Highway in Maui, it’s a place where Valley Isle artists come to create and sell their various art pieces. From ceramics to jewelry, woodwork to glass, and even textiles, The Maui Crafts Guild is a gallery of local art that’s not available anywhere else.
Local restaurants like the Paia Fish Market also offer fresh local fish and locally grown produce. Since 1989, owners Moonstar Greene and Yuri Soledade have offered Paia residents and tourists the freshest products of Maui’s agriculture.
