Once the wildfires in Lahaina were extinguished, the devastation was evident. So many Maui people had lost their homes, belongings, businesses - everything. But in the midst of these ashes, Hawaii citizens already knew Maui will rebuild. Though an estimated 2,200 destroyed structures were from Lahaina’s historical whaling and sugar industry days, sadly 86% of the destroyed structures were residential homes and dwellings. The Task Before Us Preliminary estimates from Maui County for rebuilding the city put the cost at $5.5 billion and likely will take many years to complete.
