When you decide to build a house in Maui, you’ll realize that you’ll meet a lot of new people very quickly. Architects. Designers. Project Managers. Inspectors. And a whole lot of craftsmen.
Many people who are building a home believe that they are the same things. There are similarities with both occupations, and they both design. Frequently, the terms are used interchangeably.
The interior architect designs the parts of a structure, while the interior designer uses elements such as furniture and other fixtures to complete the space. Here, we’ll explain a little so that you’ll know and understand who you are talking to when the time comes to find one.
The Interior Designer
This is the person who creates, designs, and implements the interior of a space, whether a residential or commercial property. They utilize their experience and skills to turn your area into a comfortable, livable home, and work with both function and aesthetic appeal.
The interior designer employs several tools, including drawings, specifications, and CAD software for design. He or she meets with a client to discuss what they’re looking for, what’s expected, and a budget for the work.
Although some states require it, the State of Hawaii does not require licensure or certification to become an interior designer. However, to become one, you’ll need an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to begin working for a firm.
While it’s not required, a national certification for interior designers is available, National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification exam. This accreditation demonstrates a designer’s proficiency and professional commitment, as well as competency. The Council gives the review for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ), the premier certifying organization for interior design professionals.
The Interior Architect
While interior designers have education and certifications, an interior architect is a fully licensed architect who specializes in strictly interior spaces and isn’t involved in the exterior part of a building. Structural integrity, space planning, and other aspects of the building, as well as features that dictate how it’s used when completed. He or she plans the internal structure according to the client’s requirements and needs, but may not get involved in the “décor” aspect.
An architect generally has a four-year degree from an institution of higher learning that has accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Additionally, the State of Hawaii’s Board of Professional Engineers, Architects, Surveyors, and Landscape Architects issues the licenses for architects, along with landscape architects, engineers, and surveyors. Hawaii also has continuing education requirements for architects.
