Windows in a Maui home serve multiple functions. They keep out the weather while letting in just the right amount of sunlight with less radiant heat into the house. Windows have to offer a beautiful Maui view along with open ventilation. And they need to be low- or no-maintenance while keeping their visage year after year.
The Maui Climate
Our warm climate means your windows will have to let in light but keep out the heat. Windows with high energy efficiency ratings will help you keep air conditioning costs under control. Your new home’s windows also must withstand the occasional bursts of heavy rains and wind with durability with impact-resistance.
Wooden frames offer a classic aesthetic. But in Maui, they’ll need replacement more often because of the damp climate and termites. Frames made of vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass are more durable and last longer than wood because they resist corrosion and weakening in the face of saltwater exposure.
Double-pane and triple-pane windows act as both insulation from the heat and buffers from outside noises and UV filters to protect the home’s interior. A window that is glazed with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings can help control heat transfer and keep the interior cooler.
Window Styles
Would a bay or bow window be good in your kitchen to increase light and space? What about a picture window in your living room overlooking the patio?
Of all the types of windows you can install in your home, much will depend on the use for each individual area. Casement and awning windows can be easily opened for ventilation and airflow. Single and double-hung windows give the convenience of opening the windows inside. Slider windows are ideal for patios. The addition of screens can keep insects out while airflow circulates.
The Jalousie Window
Created in 1900 before the invention of air conditioning, the distinctive Jalousie Window is a popular choice for both doors and windows of Valley Isle homes. They can be transparent or opaque and be opened to allow the free flowing of Maui’s trade winds. These windows are both functional and design elements.
Made of low-angled horizontal slats, the Jalousie Window is opened by a hand crank and adjusted as needed.
But in older homes, these windows may not close correctly, and some may let in rain and bugs along with ventilation. Some are made of wood. Fortunately, modern Jalousies are created with glass and vinyl rather than wood so that they last longer and don’t need replacement as often. They also have better safety, security, and protection from the elements.
Not Just Curb Appeal
While windows are one of the things people notice about your home, their functionality is even more important. Energy-efficient windows not only protect your home but can help reduce utility bills from air conditioning.
Your window selections should work in tandem with the rest of your home’s design. This means that windows should be considered and integrated into the plans, and not just added as an afterthought.
